Collective Quilting Workshops
Devoted to bringing communities together through the playfulness and calm of collective quilt making, I’d love to bring my sessions to your workspace or community space, to provide a space for everyone to share stories, connect, and create a beautiful piece of art for your work place.
Workshop Breakdown
Step 1: Workshop message
It’s essential our early conversations consist of working out together what the goal of your workshop is and who your participants will be. We’ll answer questions like why you want your community to come together? What’s the message you want the wall hanging to have? What colour palette would you like? Where would you like it displayed after for all to see? This will help us direct the workshop/patch design briefs.
Step 2: Patch designing
Over a lunchtime workshop from 1 - 2 hours, staff then come together to brainstorm their individual design ideas on worksheets, to then start their paper patch design getting crafty and creative! All materials are provided. Additional workshop can be added if staff want to sew their own patches.
Step 3: Sewing commences
Once the patches are designed (if staff haven’t opted in to sew their own patch), I will take away the patches, turn them into fabric patches and bring all their stories together into a final wall hanging!
Step 4: Collective reveal
To celebrate the final wall hanging, I think it’s important to then bring all those who designed the patch to come and see it hanging in it’s new home. This is a chance to celebrate their patch, find their peers, and share what their patch means to them and the story behind the designs.
FAQs
What is your availability?
I am a school teacher full time, which means my availability is limited during the week. However, I am always available on weekends as well as during school holidays, with 3 weeks off over Christmas, Easter, and 6 weeks over summer.
How many workshops are needed?
From prior workshops, participants can produce paper patch design in one 1 - 2 hour workshop. If participants want to sew their patch, depending on prior experience and detailing such as exploring different embroidery techniques and beading, an additional 2 workshops may be required.
I advise offering 1 - 3, 1 hour lunchtime drop-in sessions to produce a patch on different days to ensure accessible for all employees to attend.
How long does the whole process take from patch design to final outcome?
Depending on number of patches included in design, and my availability, time required to produce final wall hanging vary. For example, the 26 patches for ‘It Takes A Village’ for Glyndebourne Opera House, took a week to produce/sew it together once all paper patches had been designed.
